So You Got Burned.. Now What

Hi my name is Liv. I started working in skincare during highschool, and never stopped. My aesthetic education is rooted in European tradition, and I am an ingredient junky—a skintellectual. When speaking with my clients I discuss much more than just their skin. My process educates them on proper diet, maintaining appropriate stress levels, and an overall healthy mind, body & spirit. My goal is to share my knowledge with those around me, so everyone can have the opportunity to experience radiant skin.

With a long holiday weekend, I like to enjoy my days off.. stopping by a few BBQs, maybe a beach day, and definitely more time in the sun than normal. Although I take precautions to ward off unwanted rays, sometimes the first days of summer can really get the best of me. Here are the five products I'll be recommending to aid over-sunned skin and minimize any sun damage done this holiday weekend.

MINIMIZING SUN DAMAGE AFTER THE FACT

Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist ($26)

A hearty sunburn can leave your face feeling dehydrated and withered. Often times more fine lines and wrinkles form due to lack of hydration in the skin. I like to keep the Rosewater Balancing Mist by Jurlique on hand. I’ll spray it on before bed, and in the morning before I complete my skincare routine. The ingredient base is simple but effective, helping serums and moisturizers to lock in more moisture into the skin.  Their organically harvested Rosa Gallica flower is the root of Jurlique’s line, and helps to support skin barrier function which in turn is the key to a plump and dewy complexion; a tall glass of water for the skin and great for minimizing sun damage!

Freck LIL PRICK Cactus Seed Dry Serum ($40)

If you have a sunburn, you can be certain that there is plenty of inflammation occurring in the skin. Waste no time in taking steps to minimize cellular damage by using products that help restore the skin to its normal state. When our skin is inflamed we can suffer from collagen loss, genetic mutations in the cells, and aging.  LIL PRICK, contains an effective mixture of oils to restore water loss in the skin, but it also includes Marula Seed Oil, a key antioxidant that combats inflammation. Apply this serum before your moisturizer to extract more hydration from your other products, or just put on clean skin in the morning before your SPF. It can be used as a day time hydrator if you’re looking for something light and non-comedogenic.

Eminence Stone Crop Cleansing Oil ($52)

When your skin has seen too much sun, a gentle cleanser is a must. The last thing you need is a wash that will over exfoliate and strip the skin of its natural oils. The Stone Crop Cleanser from Eminence is a Vegan, Gluten-Free product rich with a potent blend of micro greens. Their carefully crafted ingredient base brings down redness and irritation in the skin, while still gently providing a deep clean. Sunflower Oil restores the skin's elasticity and is rich with vitamins A, D & E. Oh, and the smell is divine. Whether I’m trying to minimize damage from a sunburn or not, I always keep this cleanser as an alternative when my skin is in need of a little extra love.

Youth to the People Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask ($48)

This mask really is a dream! It's loaded with one of my favorite ingredients for compromised skin, Squalane, sourced from Olive Oil & Amaranth Seed. This mask deeply hydrates and boasts a stable form of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) which acts as a potent antioxidant and brightener in the skin. A nice blend of Acai, Prickly Pear, and Maqui, help to fight free radicals in the skin, which are guaranteed after a hearty sunburn. Use this mask a few nights a week to really get the maximum effect of this incredible product. Feel free to sleep in it! You’ll wake up looking refreshed and plumped.

Hydropeptide Polypeptide Collagel Eye Masks ($48)

A long day at the beach or in the pool can leave the skin around my eyes swollen and irritated. I finally found an eye mask that minimizes redness and puffiness, and is gentle enough to use first thing in the morning. If your the type of person who enjoys jade rolling or keeping cold compresses in the fridge to prevent morning puffiness, these eye masks are for you. I like to keep them in the fridge and put them on first thing in the morning before my skin care routine. They are drenched in colla-gel polypeptides to help with fine lines and wrinkles, but also go on cool to de-puff and bring circulation to the eye area! Free of gluten, parabens, phthalates and sulfates, this mask brightens things up when I’m feeling sluggish and dull.

I always tell my clients to be cautious of the sun but also to have fun. Most of us work so much that a few days off on holiday is actually what we need for our bodies to recover from daily stresses. If you get a bit burned, don’t beat yourself up about it… just take the steps you need to remedy the situation, and keep checking back in for future skin tips!
